It was never meant to be

Note to the reader: This was originally written as part of a weekly challenge, based on Taylor Swift's 'Teardrops on my Guitar'.

That there's never enough,
And he's all that I need to fall into."

It was break time, and intolerably humid outside. She saw a bunch of her classmates waving at her to join them. They had found a cool spot, and all of them were engaged in a different method of trying to cool themselves, and simultaneously trying to put food in their mouth, most of their endeavors unsuccessful.

"Hey!"

She turned. It had been a typical school day. Till that moment.

Her eyes met chocolate brown ones. In a hundredth of a second, her heart fluttered, her stomach dropped, her throat constricted, her lungs froze, her face tingled, her eyes never breaking contact. And then it was gone. Hidden behind a pair of glasses.

"I said hi."

"H-hi," she stammered. He hadn't noticed anything different. He walked past her, chatting with his friend.

But she felt a universe of difference. She let out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. Those eyes has mesmerized her, knocked almost every sense out of her, taken her breath away. She could've looked into those chocolate brown depths for days, and she'd still want more.

But her wish would never be fulfilled.

That night, her mind filled with images from the past month of her life. Unexplained dizziness. Half a dozen doctors. Half a dozen opinions. No particular diagnosis. Blood tests. MRIs. CT scans. Reports. Discussions. Still no diagnosis. A stack of drugs prescribed.

She wasn't normal, and she couldn't lead a normal life. She had taken it very well when she found out. She had always been strong. No tears, no hysteria. Just a nod of the head with a wan smile.

But now, the tears came. Thick and fast. She felt pain like she had never known before. She was never meant to be his. She couldn't bear to see sadness in those eyes.

She only hoped, that when someone did come along, she would realize how lucky she was just to be able to look into those brown depths everyday; and to have those dazzling eyes stare back into hers, with a silent promise of love.

But she would never stop loving those chocolate brown eyes that had, from that moment, defined her existence.

As I turn off the light,
I'll put his picture down,
And maybe get some sleep tonight."

  1. She shouldn't sell herself so short! Just because she's not normal, it doesn't mean she doesn't deserve the best :)
